What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture is an ancient healing practice that has been used for thousands of years to treat pain, illness, and imbalance in the body. It involves the gentle insertion of thin, sterile needles into specific points on the body to stimulate healing and restore balance.

According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, acupuncture works by regulating the flow of energy (Qi) through pathways called meridians. Modern research suggests it may also stimulate the nervous system, release natural painkillers, and promote blood flow to affected areas.

Acupuncture is safe, virtually painless, and deeply relaxing. Many patients report feeling calm and rejuvenated after their sessions.

What to expect at your acupuncture appointment

1

Consultation

Your first visit begins with a thorough consultation. Irina will ask about your health history, current symptoms, lifestyle, and goals to create a complete picture of your health.

2

Diagnosis

Using traditional diagnostic methods — including observation, questioning, and pulse diagnosis — Irina will identify patterns of imbalance and create a personalized treatment plan.

3

Treatment

You'll relax comfortably while thin, sterile needles are gently inserted at specific points. Most patients feel minimal sensation and find the experience deeply relaxing. Sessions typically last 45-60 minutes.

4

Follow-Up Care

Irina may recommend a series of treatments depending on your condition, along with lifestyle or dietary suggestions to support your healing.

Nervous about needles? The needles used in acupuncture are extremely thin — much thinner than injection needles. Most patients feel little to no discomfort and find acupuncture surprisingly relaxing.

Acupuncture FAQs

Does acupuncture hurt?

Most patients feel little to no pain. Acupuncture needles are extremely thin — about the width of a human hair. You may feel a slight tingle or dull sensation, but many patients find the experience relaxing and even fall asleep during treatment.

How many sessions will I need?

It depends on your condition. Acute issues may improve in just a few sessions, while chronic conditions typically require a longer course of treatment. Irina will discuss a recommended treatment plan during your first visit.

Is acupuncture safe?

Yes. When performed by a licensed, trained practitioner like Irina, acupuncture is very safe. We use only sterile, single-use needles. Side effects are rare and typically minor.

Can acupuncture be combined with chiropractic care?

Absolutely. Many of our patients benefit from combining acupuncture with chiropractic care or massage therapy. These treatments complement each other and can enhance your overall results.

Do you accept insurance for acupuncture?

Some insurance plans cover acupuncture. Our staff can help you verify your benefits. Give us a call at (973) 663-3002 to learn more.
